Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire is the fourth book in the series by J.K. Rowling. In this novel, Harry’s fourth year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry takes a dark and dangerous turn when he is unexpectedly chosen to compete in the Triwizard Tournament.
Plot summary
A suspicious selection: The Triwizard Tournament, a magical contest between three wizarding schools, is being hosted by Hogwarts. A magical object known as the Goblet of Fire is meant to select a single champion from each school. To everyone’s surprise, the cup selects a fourth champion: Harry Potter, who is three years too young to enter. This leads to jealousy, suspicion, and a falling-out between Harry and his best friend, Ron.
Perilous tasks: Harry must face three incredibly dangerous and frightening tasks, with only the mysterious help of the new Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, Alastor “Mad-Eye” Moody. With the assistance of his friends, he battles a Hungarian Horntail dragon, dives into a lake inhabited by merfolk, and navigates a treacherous, magical maze.
The shocking climax: In the final task, Harry and his fellow Hogwarts champion, Cedric Diggory, reach the Triwizard Cup at the same time. The cup turns out to be a Portkey, which transports them to a graveyard where Lord Voldemort and his servant Peter Pettigrew are waiting.
Voldemort’s rebirth: Cedric is murdered, and Harry is used in a dark ritual that allows Lord Voldemort to return to his full, powerful physical form. Harry narrowly escapes with Cedric’s body and returns to Hogwarts with the news of the Dark Lord’s return, an event the Ministry of Magic refuses to believe.
The imposter revealed: It is revealed that the imposter “Mad-Eye Moody” was actually a Death Eater in disguise who had been manipulating events to ensure Harry ended up in the graveyard. Dumbledore publicly announces Voldemort’s return, ending the book on a grim and somber note.
