Description
Diary of a Wimpy Kid is the first book in the series by Jeff Kinney. Presented as a journal (not a diary, as protagonist Greg Heffley insists), it details the hilarious and often cringeworthy misadventures of a middle schooler trying to navigate the social landscape.
Plot summary
  • The awkward start: The story opens with Greg Heffley beginning his first year of middle school. He faces the social perils of being an “undersized weakling” and worries about how he will measure up to the other, more mature kids.
  • Schemes for popularity: Greg constantly devises get-rich-quick and get-popular-quick schemes that inevitably backfire in spectacular fashion. Some of his memorable failures include:
    • Attempting to join the wrestling team, only to be humiliated by a nerdy classmate.
    • Getting caught listening to his older brother’s “Parental Advisory” CDs.
    • Running for class treasurer with a less-than-appropriate campaign poster.
  • Testing friendships: Much of the plot revolves around Greg’s relationship with his kindhearted, but socially clueless, best friend, Rowley Jefferson. Greg is often selfish and tries to use Rowley to advance his own social standing. For example, he gets Rowley in trouble for chasing kindergartners with a worm, even though Greg was wearing Rowley’s jacket at the time.
  • The infamous “Cheese Touch”: A running gag throughout the book is the legend of the “Cheese Touch,” a playground superstition that dictates anyone who touches a moldy piece of cheese on the blacktop is instantly ostracized. Near the end of the book, after a falling out, Rowley is forced by teenagers to eat the cheese.
  • The grand gesture (with a twist): The next day, when everyone notices the cheese is gone, Greg takes the blame to save Rowley’s reputation. He claims he threw the cheese away, becoming a social pariah with the “Cheese Touch”. This noble gesture leads to a reconciliation between the friends. The book ends with Greg and Rowley’s friendship mended, though Greg is now a social outcast and happy about it.
