Description
  • Mr. Fox is a clever fox who steals chickens, ducks, and turkeys every night from three neighboring farmers—the fat Farmer Boggis, the short Farmer Bunce, and the lean Farmer Bean.
  • Tired of being outsmarted, the farmers hatch a plan to kill Mr. Fox. They ambush him outside his home, shooting off his tail as he narrowly escapes.
  • When shovels fail to unearth the fox family, the three farmers use mechanical shovels to dig up the entire hill, destroying the animals’ homes.
  • The foxes dig deeper to evade the farmers, but they become trapped and begin to starve.
  • In his moment of desperation, Mr. Fox devises a “fantastic” plan. He leads his children in a tunnel-digging expedition that goes deep underground, safely past the farmers, and directly into the farmers’ food stores.
  • He steals chickens from Boggis’ farm, ducks and geese from Bunce’s farm, and finally, uses his intelligence to raid Bean’s secret cider cellar.
  • Along the way, Mr. Fox and his family are joined by other burrowing animals, including Badger, who are also starving and displaced by the farmers’ destruction.
  • The animals gather for a magnificent feast in their new underground home. Mr. Fox invites all of his friends and family to stay there permanently, safe from the farmers.
  • The story ends with the mean-spirited farmers still waiting outside the foxhole for Mr. Fox to emerge, completely unaware that they are being robbed from below.
Core themes
  • The triumph of cleverness over brute force: Mr. Fox and the other animals use their wits and resourcefulness to overcome the physically stronger and wealthier farmers.
  • Family and community: The novel highlights the importance of loyalty, teamwork, and unity in the face of adversity. The animals band together for survival and create a new community underground.
  • Good versus evil: The animals are portrayed as the sympathetic underdogs, while the farmers are depicted as nasty, greedy villains motivated by revenge.
  • Greed and its consequences: The farmers’ single-minded pursuit of revenge against Mr. Fox causes them to neglect their farms and leaves them foolishly waiting in the rain at the story’s conclusion.
