Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince is the sixth book in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. It chronicles Harry’s sixth year at Hogwarts, which takes a much darker and more somber tone as the war against Voldemort intensifies.
Plot summary
Voldemort’s past revealed: With the Ministry of Magic finally admitting that Voldemort has returned, Headmaster Albus Dumbledore takes Harry on a series of lessons to explore the Dark Lord’s past. Together, they view memories of Tom Riddle’s childhood and learn about Horcruxes—magical objects in which Voldemort has hidden fragments of his soul to achieve immortality.
The mysterious “Half-Blood Prince”: While studying for his Potions class, Harry uses a heavily annotated textbook he finds in a storage cupboard. The notes, signed by “the Half-Blood Prince,” contain helpful potion-making instructions and powerful spells. The book, and the identity of its previous owner, become a major mystery throughout the story.
Draco Malfoy’s dark mission: Harry becomes suspicious that his rival, Draco Malfoy, has been tasked with a mission by Voldemort himself. His suspicions are dismissed by his friends and teachers, but Harry secretly obsesses over proving that Malfoy is now a Death Eater.
The tragic climax: At the book’s conclusion, Dumbledore and Harry embark on a dangerous mission to retrieve one of the Horcruxes. A weakened Dumbledore is taken to the top of the Astronomy Tower at Hogwarts, where he is confronted by Draco Malfoy and other Death Eaters. Severus Snape arrives and, to Harry’s horror, kills Dumbledore.
The Prince’s identity revealed: In the ensuing chaos, Harry pursues Snape, who reveals that he is the Half-Blood Prince before escaping.
A commitment to destroy Voldemort: At Dumbledore’s funeral, Harry finds that the Horcrux locket they retrieved was a fake. It contains a note from a mysterious individual named “R.A.B.” who stole the real one. At the book’s end, Harry, Ron, and Hermione vow to forgo their final year at Hogwarts to hunt down and destroy all of Voldemort’s remaining Horcruxes.
