Description
Newer manipulation techniques leverage modern technology and social dynamics to influence behavior, often operating subtly through digital platforms or within evolving social and work environments. While traditional methods like gaslighting and guilt-tripping persist, the latest tactics incorporate advancements in AI, social media, and digital communication.
Psychological and interpersonal manipulation
Modern psychological manipulation builds on classic tactics by exploiting new social vulnerabilities and the shift to digital interaction.
  • Pet-to-threat dynamic: In the workplace, a manipulator may initially groom a colleague, particularly a minority or woman, as a favorite or mentee. When that person begins to succeed and gain recognition, the manipulator perceives them as a threat. The support then turns into subtle undermining, such as withholding information or reassigning projects under the guise of “concern” for the individual’s well-being.
  • Performative allyship: This technique involves a person, often a leader, publicly supporting a diversity and inclusion cause through social media posts or statements but failing to take meaningful action when faced with real issues. This public performance masks a lack of genuine commitment to change and can be used to manipulate perception.
  • Emotional reactions that shift focus: A manipulator can use an exaggerated emotional response to redirect a conversation. By appearing hurt or upset when confronted with an issue, they shift the focus from their own wrongdoing to the emotional state of the victim, making the victim feel guilty for causing distress.
  • Ghosting: While ghosting (ending contact without explanation) is not new, its prevalence in digital communication has made it a powerful tool for manipulation. It creates ambiguity and self-doubt, as the target is left without closure or an understanding of what went wrong. This tactic is also used in recruiting, leaving candidates feeling uncertain and disrespected.
  • Love-bombing: Used in relationships and increasingly in professional settings, love-bombing is the practice of overwhelming someone with excessive displays of affection, praise, and attention. This creates a quick, intense emotional bond that can be leveraged later for control.
Digital and AI-powered manipulation
Advancements in digital media and artificial intelligence have enabled more sophisticated forms of manipulation.
  • Deepfakes and AI-generated content: AI algorithms can now produce highly realistic, but fabricated, videos, images, and audio. This technology can be used to spread misinformation, create malicious content, or manipulate public opinion by impersonating individuals.
  • Algorithmic manipulation: Social media platforms use complex algorithms to drive user engagement by creating personalized content feeds. Manipulators can exploit these systems by creating “reactive, agile, and trending” (R.A.T.) content that taps into existing memes and cultural moments to rapidly go viral and influence large audiences.
  • Sophisticated social commerce: Social media platforms are integrating commerce functions, blurring the line between content and shopping. Manipulators use short-form, high-impact videos and user-generated content to drive impulsive purchasing decisions, bypassing critical thought.
  • LLM (Large Language Model) search engine optimization (SEO): With AI-powered search tools changing how information is consumed, content is now being structured to be “pulled” by these models. This can involve creating modular content that is easily scraped and synthesized by AI, allowing manipulators to control the narrative that appears in search results.
  • Personalized visual manipulation: AI tools allow for automated, highly personalized digital image and video manipulation. In marketing, this can be used to present products in hyper-idealized settings, while in propaganda, it can be used to alter images to fit a desired narrative.
Institutional and systemic manipulation
Manipulation can also be embedded within the structure of an organization or system.
  • Hybrid work manipulation: The shift to remote and hybrid work has opened new avenues for manipulation. Managers can micromanage or withhold critical information from remote employees, creating anxiety and uncertainty. The overemphasis on “team harmony” can also be used to silence remote workers who raise legitimate concerns.
  • Fake career advancement: Some employers manipulate ambitious employees by offering prestigious-sounding promotions that lack meaningful pay raises or decision-making power. This tactic is used to placate employees and keep them in their roles without offering genuine advancement.
  • Exploitation of well-being initiatives: Organizations may use well-being and mental health programs performatively to manipulate employee perception. The existence of these programs can give the illusion of a supportive workplace while masking underlying toxic behaviors and management issues.
