Plot summary

Over the years, Rasheed’s initial kindness gives way to physical and emotional abuse, especially after Mariam fails to provide him with a son.
Laila’s story (1970s–1980s): The novel shifts its focus to Laila, a bright and educated young girl in Kabul who grows up in a progressive family. When a rocket attack kills her parents, Laila is taken in by Rasheed and Mariam. Having recently learned her childhood sweetheart, Tariq, was allegedly killed, and pregnant with his child, Laila accepts Rasheed’s marriage proposal as her only means of survival.
A new family (1990s): The two women initially harbor animosity toward each other, but their shared suffering under Rasheed’s escalating abuse forges an unlikely and deep sisterly bond. Climax and resolution (2001–2003): When Tariq unexpectedly returns years later, Rasheed’s fury leads to a violent confrontation. To save Laila from being strangled, Mariam kills Rasheed with a shovel. Knowing she will be executed, Mariam sacrifices herself to ensure Laila, Tariq, and the children can escape to a new life in Pakistan. After the fall of the Taliban, Laila and Tariq return to Kabul to help rebuild their country, with Laila working at an orphanage and honoring Mariam’s memory.
