Description
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second book in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. In this novel, Harry’s second year at Hogwarts is plagued by dark events as students begin to be mysteriously petrified.
Plot summary
- A warning from a house-elf: After a miserable summer with his abusive relatives, Harry is visited by a mischievous house-elf named Dobby, who warns him not to return to Hogwarts. Dobby even sabotages an important dinner to keep Harry away, but Harry is ultimately rescued by his friend Ron Weasley in a flying car.
- The Chamber of Secrets: Back at Hogwarts, Harry, Ron, and Hermione are unsettled when a cryptic message appears on a wall, announcing that the “Chamber of Secrets has been opened”. This signals the return of a legendary monster said to purge the school of “Mudbloods,” or students with non-magical parents.
- The petrification attacks: Students are found petrified, appearing as though they have been turned to stone. The attacks and a strange voice only Harry can hear raise suspicions that he is the heir of Slytherin, especially after he reveals his ability to speak Parseltongue (the language of snakes).
- The diary’s dark secret: The trio discovers a magical diary that shows Harry a memory from 50 years ago. In the memory, a young Tom Riddle (who would later become Lord Voldemort) pins the blame for the attacks on Hagrid, who is subsequently expelled.
- A final confrontation: When Ron’s younger sister, Ginny, is taken into the Chamber, Harry and Ron must act. In the Chamber, Harry finds a revived young Tom Riddle, who reveals he is Voldemort and used Ginny and the diary to unleash a deadly basilisk on the school. Harry, with help from Dumbledore’s phoenix, Fawkes, defeats the basilisk and destroys the diary.
Key themes
- The danger of prejudice: The novel explores themes of prejudice and racism in the wizarding world through the concept of “pure-blood” supremacy.
- Loyalty and choice: It emphasizes the importance of loyalty, friendship, and bravery. The ending highlights Dumbledore’s message to Harry that his choices, rather than his inborn abilities or ancestry, define who he is.
- Standing up for what’s right: The book continues to develop the idea that standing up against injustice is always the right thing to do, no matter how intimidating the adversary.
