Description
Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban is the third book in the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling. In this novel, Harry’s third year at Hogwarts is fraught with peril as he learns that a dangerous wizard has escaped from the wizarding prison of Azkaban and is supposedly hunting for him.
Plot summary
  • The escape from Azkaban: After a bad summer at the Dursleys, Harry learns from the magical media that a notorious mass-murderer named Sirius Black has escaped from Azkaban prison. A dark and frightening atmosphere takes hold as the school is placed under the guard of Dementors—terrible hooded creatures who feed on happiness.
  • A new teacher and lessons: Harry, Ron, and Hermione’s classes take an interesting turn, with new Professor Remus Lupin teaching them how to repel shape-shifting Boggarts and the dangerous Dementors. Hagrid also becomes a teacher, but his first class ends disastrously when a Hippogriff named Buckbeak is insulted by Draco Malfoy and attacks him.
  • Betrayal and revelation: With the help of the Marauder’s Map, Harry sneaks into the nearby village of Hogsmeade, where he overhears that Sirius Black was a close friend of his parents and betrayed them to Voldemort. This revelation fuels Harry’s desire for revenge. However, as the mystery unravels, Harry and his friends discover that the real traitor is Peter Pettigrew, who has been hiding in plain sight as Ron’s pet rat, Scabbers.
  • A race against time: The climax of the story involves a dramatic confrontation in the Shrieking Shack, followed by a harrowing escape. With Hermione’s magical Time-Turner, she and Harry travel back in time to save two innocent lives—Buckbeak and Sirius Black.
Key themes
  • The injustice of the legal system: The story explores how people are wrongly judged by society, as seen in the persecution of Sirius Black and the Hippogriff, Buckbeak.
  • Loyalty and friendship: The deep bonds between friends are highlighted through the backstory of Harry’s parents and their companions, as well as Harry’s unbreakable friendship with Ron and Hermione.
  • Confronting fear: The Dementors are a powerful symbol for fear and despair. Harry’s journey to master the Patronus Charm represents his personal fight to overcome his deepest trauma and find his inner strength.
  • Appearance vs. reality: Throughout the book, appearances are misleading, challenging Harry and the reader to look beyond initial assumptions and discover the truth.
