The NEW ARABIC COURSE FOR ENGLISH SPEAKING STUDENTS BOOK 2 is the second volume in the comprehensive and highly regarded Arabic curriculum, often referred to as the Madinah Arabic Course (Duruus al-Lughah al-Arabiyyah li Ghayr al-Naatiqiina bihaa), authored by Dr. V. Abdur Rahim.

Book 2 builds upon the foundational knowledge of nominal sentences and basic particles acquired in Book 1, making the crucial transition to Verbal Sentences and more complex grammatical structures.

Key Features and Content of Book 2

Book 2 is considered a significant step-up in difficulty as it introduces the complexities of verb conjugation, moods, and the way the Arabic sentence structure shifts when a verb is present.

1. Primary Focus: The Verbal Sentence

The central theme of Book 2 is the introduction and detailed study of the Verbal Sentence (al-Jumlah al-Fi’liyyah).

2. Core Grammatical Topics

The book systematically introduces new grammar concepts in each lesson, focusing heavily on verbs (al-Af’aal) and their associated rules:

  • Past Tense Verb (al-Fi’l al-Māḍī): Introduction to verb forms and their complete conjugation across all pronouns (he, she, they, you, I, we).
  • Present/Future Tense Verb (al-Fi’l al-Muḍāri’): Introduction to the present tense verb and its basic conjugations.
  • Imperative Verb (Fi’l al-Amr): Learning how to form command verbs.
  • The Sisters of Inna and Kāna: Introducing particles that affect the case endings of the subject and predicate in a nominal sentence (e.g., Inna makes the subject accusative, Kāna makes the predicate accusative).
  • Numbers (11-20): Detailed rules for compound numbers and their masculine/feminine agreement.
  • The Object of the Verb (al-Maf’ūl bihi): Understanding the accusative case (maṇṣūb) and its application to the direct object of the verb.
  • Comparative and Superlative Degrees: Learning to form adjectives like ‘bigger’ or ‘the biggest’ (ism at-tafḍīl).
  • Diptotes (al-Mamnu’ min aṣ-Ṣarf): Introducing nouns that take limited case endings (cannot take tanwīn or a final kasrah).

3. Methodology

Similar to Book 1, the course continues to use a practical, step-by-step method where new grammatical rules are introduced via dialogues and reading passages using Modern Standard Arabic vocabulary mixed with Quranic/Islamic terminology. Exercises are provided to ensure students can immediately apply the newly learned verb and sentence structures.
