Description
A Thousand Splendid Suns is a novel by Khaled Hosseini that tells the story of two Afghan women, Mariam and Laila, whose lives are brought together by the tragedies of war and an oppressive, abusive husband. Spanning decades of Afghanistan’s tumultuous history—from the Soviet invasion and civil war to the brutal rule of the Taliban—the novel is a powerful exploration of female resilience, friendship, sacrifice, and hope.
Plot summary
- Mariam’s story (1960s–1970s): The narrative begins in the city of Herat, introducing Mariam, an illegitimate child (
harami) who is ostracized by her family. After her mother commits suicide, Mariam is married off at age 15 to Rasheed, a much older shoemaker from Kabul. Over the years, Rasheed’s initial kindness gives way to physical and emotional abuse, especially after Mariam fails to provide him with a son. - Laila’s story (1970s–1980s): The novel shifts its focus to Laila, a bright and educated young girl in Kabul who grows up in a progressive family. When a rocket attack kills her parents, Laila is taken in by Rasheed and Mariam. Having recently learned her childhood sweetheart, Tariq, was allegedly killed, and pregnant with his child, Laila accepts Rasheed’s marriage proposal as her only means of survival.
- A new family (1990s): The two women initially harbor animosity toward each other, but their shared suffering under Rasheed’s escalating abuse forges an unlikely and deep sisterly bond. As the Taliban rises to power and life under their strict laws becomes unbearable, the two women find strength and a fierce protectiveness over Laila’s children.
- Climax and resolution (2001–2003): When Tariq unexpectedly returns years later, Rasheed’s fury leads to a violent confrontation. To save Laila from being strangled, Mariam kills Rasheed with a shovel. Knowing she will be executed, Mariam sacrifices herself to ensure Laila, Tariq, and the children can escape to a new life in Pakistan. After the fall of the Taliban, Laila and Tariq return to Kabul to help rebuild their country, with Laila working at an orphanage and honoring Mariam’s memory.

- Love and friendship: The central pillar of the story is the powerful, maternal bond between Mariam and Laila, demonstrating that love can emerge in the bleakest of circumstances.
- Oppression vs. education: The contrast between Mariam’s uneducated and isolated upbringing and Laila’s access to education highlights the devastating impact of oppression on women’s lives.
- The burden of history: The political turmoil of Afghanistan is not merely a backdrop but is deeply intertwined with the personal fates of the characters, showcasing how larger historical events inflict lasting, individual trauma.
- Sacrifice and redemption: Mariam’s ultimate sacrifice is an act of profound love that redeems her difficult life and provides the possibility of a new future for those she cares for.
